Deepavali falls on Sunday, 8 November 2026 in Tamil Nadu. It is on the state’s 2026 holiday list (G.O.(Ms.) No. 708), as Sakshi Post and Dinamalar reported on 12 November 2025. That gives you four weeks from today. The calm way to a clean home is to spread the work out. Clear out and wash fabrics in the first week, deep-clean the kitchen and bathrooms in the second, and do bedrooms and the balcony in the last week. Keep the day before for floors, the pooja room and the entrance.

Below you’ll find a room-by-room checklist for each stage, a short guide to what is worth doing yourself and what is easier to book, and the one safety rule for cleaning products that every family should follow.

Your Deepavali cleaning countdown

Ayudha Pooja is on Monday, 19 October this year (same holiday list), so many homes will do a first round of cleaning that week. Build on it rather than starting again.

When Dates in 2026 Focus
3 weeks before 18–24 October Clear out, wash fabrics, book help
2 weeks before 25–31 October Kitchen, bathrooms, fans, windows and grills
Last week 1–6 November Bedrooms, cupboards, balcony, small repairs
The day before Saturday, 7 November Floors, pooja room, entrance

3 weeks before: clear out and plan

  • Go room by room with three bags: keep, give away, throw. Start with old newspapers, empty boxes and broken things.
  • Wash curtains, cushion covers, bedsheets and sofa covers on sunny days, so they dry fully.
  • Switch on every light, fan and socket you’ll use for the festival. List anything that flickers, sparks or doesn’t work.
  • Decide what you will do yourselves and what you will book, and fix the dates now.

2 weeks before: kitchen and bathrooms

Kitchen:

  • Empty the shelves, wipe them and the containers, and throw out expired stock.
  • Degrease the tiles behind the stove, the counter, the chimney or exhaust fan and the outside of the cabinets.
  • Soak the gas stove burners in warm soapy water, scrub, and let them dry fully before you fit them back.
  • Empty the fridge, wipe the inside with mild soapy water and clean the door seal.
  • Clear the sink strainer and run hot water down the drain.

Bathrooms:

  • Descale taps, shower heads and tiles, scrub the grout, and clean the toilet including under the rim.
  • Clean the exhaust fan and the window louvres.

Fans, lights, windows:

  • Switch the fan off and wait for it to stop before you wipe the blades. Dust tubelights and light covers.
  • Dry-dust window grills first, then wipe them and the inside of the glass.

Last week: bedrooms, cupboards and balcony

  • Empty one cupboard at a time, wipe the inside and line the shelves with fresh paper.
  • Dust the tops of wardrobes, the lofts and behind furniture, and clean under the beds.
  • On the balcony and in the utility area, clear the floor drain, wash the floor and wipe the railings.
  • Wipe doors, handles and switchboards. Use a dry cloth on switchboards, never a wet one.
  • Get the leaking tap, running flush or loose switch fixed now, not on festival morning.

The day before

  • Mop every floor, working from the farthest room towards the main door.
  • In the pooja room, clean the lamps and vessels, wash the cloths and wipe the shelves and photos.
  • Wash the doorstep and the spot for the kolam, and wipe the main door.
  • Keep a broom, dustpan and a bin bag ready for cracker paper the next morning.

Cleaning products: the one rule that matters

Festival cleaning is when people reach for the strongest bottles in the house, and sometimes use two at once on a stubborn stain. Don’t.

Never mix bleach with acid cleaners (vinegar, many toilet and tile cleaners) or with ammonia. Bleach and an acid give off chlorine gas; bleach and ammonia give off toxic gases called chloramines.

The Washington State Department of Health says these gases can cause coughing, shortness of breath, watery eyes and chest pain, and that very high levels of chlorine gas can cause death. The CDC’s advice for using cleaning products at home is simple:

  1. Read and follow the label every time.
  2. Wear gloves, and goggles if the label recommends them.
  3. Open windows or run a fan when you use products indoors.
  4. Do not mix products or chemicals with each other. Use one product, rinse with water, then use the next.
  5. Label any cleaner you dilute with water.
  6. Store everything out of reach of children and pets.

If someone feels unwell after breathing in fumes, get them out into fresh air and contact a doctor.

Book early

Many families aim for the last weekend before Deepavali, so those dates are the first to go. Booking a date in the second or third week gives you time to fix anything that was missed, and leaves the final days for the pooja room and the sweets. Before the crew comes, put away valuables and fragile things, and empty any cupboards you want cleaned inside. If your apartment needs a gate pass, arrange it in advance. Our note on getting your home ready for a house help visit has a few more small things that save time on the day.
