Hiring house help in Coimbatore: agency, app or neighbour?

How to find a maid for home in Coimbatore: a neighbour’s referral, a maid agency or an app, compared on cost, leave cover, checks and fairness.

There are three common ways to find house help in Coimbatore: a referral from a neighbour or relative, a maid agency, or an app. A referral is the most personal and usually the most flexible, but you arrange everything yourself, including cover when your helper is on leave. An agency can offer a replacement and its own checks, so ask exactly what it promises and what its fees are. An app such as Trice lets you book by the hour or on a monthly plan, with set prices and checks it states publicly.

No route is right for every home. The questions that matter are the same for all three: what it costs, who covers leave, what checks are done, how flexible it is, and whether the helper is treated fairly.

The three routes side by side

Neighbour or word of mouth Maid agency App (for example Trice)
Cost You agree pay directly with the helper Agency charges vary; ask for the full amount and any fee in writing Fixed, published prices; at Trice, ₹199 an hour (2-hour minimum) or a monthly plan from ₹4,500 a month
Cover when the helper is on leave Usually none, unless you arrange it Depends on the agency; ask what it promises At Trice, same-day backup help, or an ID-checked backup on the monthly plan
Checks What you do yourself, plus the trust of the person who referred them Depends on the agency; ask exactly what is checked Whatever the app states; at Trice, an in-person ID check (details below)
Flexibility Very flexible, agreed between you Set by the agency’s terms Book by the hour on any day, or fixed days on a plan
Who manages it You You and the agency You and the app’s support team

A neighbour’s referral

It is the most familiar route, and for good reason. You hear first-hand how the person works, and you deal with them directly, so the full pay goes to the helper and the arrangement can bend around both your lives.

The trade-off is that everything is on you: agreeing pay, checking ID, and finding someone when your helper is unwell or away. There is also no official survey of maid wages in Coimbatore. The one hard number is the legal floor. Tamil Nadu’s minimum wage notification for domestic work (G.O.(2D) No.99, 8 November 2022) sets ₹45.50 an hour for unskilled domestic work in Corporation areas (Zone A), which covers washing clothes, washing utensils and sweeping and mopping. That works out to ₹1,365 a month for one hour a day. It is a minimum, not a market rate. Our guide to part-time maid costs in Coimbatore goes into what people actually pay.

A maid agency

An agency finds and places a helper for you. What it offers depends entirely on the agency, so read its terms. As one published example, the FAQ on Sulekha’s Coimbatore housekeeping page (accessed October 2026) says:

  • housekeeping staff hired through agencies must undergo background checks by the agency;
  • if the maid is sick or quits “for no valid reason then you will be given a replacement service for the day”;
  • to hire for a month “you will have to pay around Rs. 15000 to Rs. 30000”. The FAQ does not say how many hours a day this covers.

These are Sulekha’s general answers, not the terms of any particular agency. Before you sign, ask the agency for its fee in writing, what its “background check” actually involves, how quickly a replacement comes and for how long, and how much of what you pay reaches the helper.

An app

An app turns house help into a booking: you choose the hours, the price is shown up front, and someone else handles cover. At Trice, you can book hourly house help for a busy day, use same-day backup when your regular help cannot come (see what to do when your maid didn’t come), or take the regular help plan: the same helper on fixed days, priced on a call, with an ID-checked backup when they are on leave. You pay after the job, by UPI or cash.

The checks are stated on our help page and explained in full in what ID-checked means at Trice. In short, our staff meet every partner in person, see an original ID, check they are 18 or older and take the photo for their badge. With the partner’s consent we apply for police verification, which can take a few weeks. We do no reference check and no criminal-record search.

An app is less personal than a neighbour’s referral, and on hourly bookings you may not always get the same person. You can ask for the same partner when we call to confirm, and we send them when they are free.

The helper’s side

Whichever route you choose, the person doing the work deserves fair pay, paid on time, and respect. Agree the hours and stick to them. If the work grows, the pay should too. Basic courtesies matter: drinking water, use of a toilet, and a proper break on long days. Domestic workers in Tamil Nadu can also register with the state welfare board; we explain how in our post on the Tamil Nadu Domestic Workers Welfare Board.

Whatever route you take, write down the hours, the tasks and the pay before the first day. Most disagreements start where nothing was agreed.

A checklist for any route

  1. See the original ID. Look at the card itself, not a photo on a phone, and note the details. Return it; do not keep anyone’s original documents.
  2. Agree hours, tasks, days off and pay in writing. A short note or a saved message both of you have read is enough.
  3. Never share OTPs, your UPI PIN or bank details with anyone, helper or not.
  4. Consider police verification. The Ministry of Home Affairs’ Digital Police portal says citizens can “seek antecedent verification of prospective employees (including for domestic help, drivers etc.)”, with responses by email. It does not say what Tamil Nadu offers or any fee, so ask at your local police station.
  5. Pay at least the legal minimum, on the agreed date, and keep a record.
  6. Plan for leave before you need it: a backup contact, an agency replacement, or a same-day booking.

How Trice can help

If you want help without managing every detail yourself, Trice offers hourly house help, same-day backup and a monthly regular help plan in Saravanampatti and nearby areas. Every partner is ID-checked by Trice in person, prices are fixed, and you pay after the job. If a neighbour’s referral already works well for you, we are happy to be the backup for the days it doesn’t.
